It is a spinal injury if:
- A dog has fallen from more than twice their height, or been pushed with force.
- Something heavy has fallen onto them.
- They have been involved in a road traffic accident, either whilst being in a moving vehicle or being hit by anything at speed.
- They have a head injury.
If they are conscious, keep them as still and calm as possible. Phone the vet immediately. Carefully transport them to the closest vet’s, doing your best not to twist their spine as you move them. A car parcel shelf or stiff board can be helpful as an improvised stretcher.
Ideally it is at least a two person job, with one person supporting the head and neck and the other coordinating the rest of the body to minimise twisting.
