Spinal injuries can be extremely worrying and if you are in any doubt as to whether or not your dog has sustained a spinal injury, they will need to be checked by a vet immediately.
You should definitely suspect a spinal injury if:
- The dog has fallen from more than twice their height, or been pushed with force.
- Something heavy has fallen onto them.
- They have been in a car accident – either whilst ina moving vehicle or being hit by anything at speed.
- They have a head injury.
Signs to look out for include:
- Your dog being in pain
- Them being lethargic
- Your dog walking in a different/awkward way or inability to walk
- Their spine looking different to normal
If you do suspect a spinal injury, these are the following steps to follow:

- If they are conscious, keep them as still and calm as possible.
- Phone your vet immediately.
- Carefully transport them to the closest vet’s, doing your best not to twist their spine as you move them. A car parcel shelf or stiff board can be helpful as an improvised stretcher. Ideally this is at least a two-person job, with one person supporting the head and neck and the other coordinating the rest of the body to minimise twisting.
Do not give them anything to eat or drink, as they may need an anesthetic as soon as they get to the vet.
