Do not remove the embedded object from the wound, as it will be damaged on the way in and will damage again on the way out! It may also be stemming any bleeding. Apply pressure without pushing on the embedded object.
You can do this in two ways:
Either use 2 rolled bandages either side of the embedded object or a triangular bandage rolled into a donut ring.
Then pad above the object using rolled bandages or a rolled donut ring. This allows you to bandage over the object to prevent it getting knocked on the way to the Vet.
What if there is glass embedded in the wound?
If you suspect that there is glass in the wound, your pet may need an x-ray. Never remove anything embedded in a wound. With the exception of a small splinter that is clearly visible and easy to remove.
How to remove a small splinter
If the splinter is on a joint it should only be removed by a vet as it is possible that the joint capsule may have been damaged and this could lead to infection.
• Clean the wound with warm soapy water
• Use a pair of clean tweezers, grip the splinter close to the skin and gently pull the splinter out. At the same angle as it appears to have entered.
• Gently squeeze around the wound to encourage a little bleeding and ensure that there is nothing else remaining in the wound. Clean the wound once more and then cover with a breathable sterile dressing.
